Why is articulation (pronunciation and talking) important?

Articulation is an important aspect in speech for the production of sonnas, words and sentences. In order to effectively express basic needs and wants , clear articulation is necessary such that one can be easily understood when engaging in complex conversations.

Depending on the extent of one’s difficulties, unclear speech can significantly impair how well a child interacts with adults and and their peers and can affect the development of language and social skills. A child who is having difficulties being understood can become frustrated and angry which may lead to behavioural issues. Articulation is also important in literacy skills such as reading and spelling.

Why is language development so important for children?

If a child is having difficulties using speech (expressive language) you may notice:

  • Poor attention and concentration
  • Gives unusual answers to questions
  • Sounds immature
  • Poor behaviour as the child cannot be understood by others
  • Difficulties making and maintaining friendships
  • Difficulties being understood by others
  • Poor social skills
  • Sentences are jumbled with words in the wrong order

Why is literacy important?

Literacy is important for a child to get through their schooling years, as reading, spelling and writing are required to pass assessments. It is also important in daily life. A lot of information available to us is in written form (e.g. newspapers, books, internet articles, signs). In order to have access to this information a person needs to be able to read.

Reading also aids in the development of language, as it exposes children to new vocabulary and deepens their understanding of the structure of language. The extent to which a student is able to demonstrate their academic ability is significantly reliant on a student’s ability to capture their thoughts in written communication. For each year level and academic task that a student attempts there is usually a prescribed (known) or unwritten expectation of how much should be written, by what means and how to structure that information.

What is articulation (pronunciation and talking)?

Articulation (pronunciation and talking) is the ability to physically move the tongue, lips, teeth and jaw to produce sequences of speech sounds, which make up words and sentences.
